A German U boat (submarine) that was built in 1942, during WWII. There is a theory that Hitler sent the Holy Lance, a spear believed to have been the very one that pierced Christ's side on the cross to Antarctica on this U boat for safe keeping, apparently Hitler collected Biblical relics. However, somehow, this ship was torpedoed off the coast of Denmark and it sank. The shipwreck was apparently never found, creepy right?. however, the spear itself was claimed to have been found in 1973, and was then placed in a secret Nazi society in an unknown location in Europe. If U-534 did indeed have the spear, could one of Christianity's most interesting relics lie somewhere close to Denmark in a wrecked U-Boat? Or could it be somewhere yet to be explored? That remains to be seen...

I was the PR man for the Historic Warships at Birkenhead until the museum closed. The U-534 was not torpedoed, it was bombed by the RAF and sunk in the Kattegat, and later raised and taken to Birkenhead docks where it was displayed, until the Historic Warships closed down. The U534 was then taken to Woodside, cut up and displayed next to the Woodside ferry terminal, by Mersey travel, where it still remains. It is known as 'The U-Boat Story.' There were several stories told about the U523 last voyage, the spear of destiny being one of them. Another story concerned a mystery man boarding the U-Boat under great secrecy, but that too is a myth.
